Dear Lagniappe
Seekers,
Have you wondered what kind of
feeling one derives from picking oranges in November, golfing in December,
catching sac-a-lait in January or pruning roses in
February? There are so many mood elevators in the southwestern Louisiana town of
DeRidder it's like a vacation every
day.
DeRidder offers an ideal climate year round. It should be on
the "must" list for those who are considering to relocate - for those who are
planning to retire - or anyone planning a trip through the
South.
There is no single theme to describe
DeRidder - it is not an industrial town, nor is it a
rural farming town. It offers a relaxing, laid-back way of life that is
surrounded by a potpourri of cultures, food and activities.
Theatre * Library * Antiques *
Museums * Gardens * Writer’s Guild * Veterans Organizations * Quilting Groups *
DeRidder has it
all!
Military veterans can identify with a
sense of belonging, due to legacy of WW II.
* 1st USO, DeRidder Army Air Base, Fort Polk and 1941 "Big" LA
Maneuvers
* Excellent health care,
practitioners and specialists, in addition to health care facilities at Fort Polk,
Pineville VA, and Jennings VA.
* Fort Polk National Cemetery (to be
completed)
Probably one of the greatest
attractions to our area is the way state and local tax bills stack up.
Considering inheritance, property, income and sales tax, the state of Louisiana
is among one of the lowest in total tax bills. And to boot, public
pensions are exempt from income
tax.
We have so many things to celebrate *
three golf courses and gaming within commuting distance of DeRidder * several bingo parlors where the locals gather for
the big prizes * along with several lakes and streams where one can snag the
"big one." There are fitness centers to rejuvenate body and mind as well as
walking trails.
Of primary consideration in
establishing a new home is Crime * Security * Safety, along with low housing
cost and low cost-of-living. Infrastructure - City Services, are keeping pace
with our growth.
We invite you to the affordable
"Eden." Come and embrace the warmth and friendliness of our people along with
"our down home cooking."

Area abounds with
mood elevators
DeRidder with its historical and recreational value sets the
area apart as a year round vacation spot.
Visitors find it to be a place where you
will "fit in," where anyone can be comfortable socially, politically and
culturally. Once visitors get hooked, they can’t get enough of Beauregard
Parish, with the Sabine River as the western gateway to Louisiana from
Texas.
A description of the area would be that of
southern small town attributes like low cost-of-living, low cost recreational
opportunities, mild climate, high quality-of-life, available land with low
housing cost and low crime, all in one package.
Beauregard Parish is a favorite with
military retirees because of the high quality of living. Due to the proximity
and convenience of Fort Polk and its amenities, families enjoy making retirement
plans to stay in the area. Just a short drive takes you to either Houston or the
Gulf of Mexico.

More About Beauregard Parish

Laid back lifestyle, southern cooking, clean air, and good water are
just a few of the attributes that we offer to
newcomers.
Outdoor enthusiasts enjoy the area as a sportsman's paradise with
deer, turkey, quail and dove in abundance. The natural beauty of Bundick Swamp, Old River and habitat of the old DeRidder Army Air Base, make it an ideal study area for
wildflowers and bird watching.
With eager anticipation, visitors shop for local satsumas (oranges native to Louisiana), blueberries and
pecans. The especially active individual takes advantage of U-Pick pricing when
that craving for something extra tasty develops for muscadines, mayhaws, peaches, figs
or watermelons.

Mayhaws (resemble crab apples) are processed for jelly, so good with buttermilk biscuits
Beauregard Parish can boast of its recreational
assets such as Bundick Lake, Longville Lake and Sabine
River. It
doesn't matter what fresh water fish you like to catch, the waters are teeming
with bass, crappie and catfish. One doesn't even have to be an avid
fisherman to showcase the
"big one". Have it stuffed at the
local taxidermist or shake in corn meal and flour, fry in deep oil and enjoy
some really good eating. You may think you've heard it all, but there are locals
who report good catches on pieces of hot dogs (no-stink no-mess).
The cuisine will satisfy any taste bud that represents a cross
section of cultures from German to Creole or Chinese to Italian. Fried catfish
and parched peanuts are the Friday night
favorite.
Noteworthy are the good medical services for a small town area. Acute care is provided along with heart
catheterization and special procedures laboratory. Home Health Care and meals are
available, along with social service groups such as Council of
Aging.
Equally noteworthy are the educational opportunities offered at Fort
Polk, just a short drive away (less than 30
minutes).
A major asset for military retirees and dependents is Fort Polk (18
miles north of DeRidder), which provides medical, PX,
commissary, golf course and recreational
facilities.
