The Founder of Brushy Creek Baptist Church
Reverend Z. S. Patterson
The Brushy Creek Baptist Church was consecrated in 1874 with three charter members.
Joseph A. Whitman, George Foster and Mrs. A. Cochron. The organizing minister was Reverend Z. S. Patterson.
Reverend Patterson was the descendent of a Scottish immigrant. His father, Moses Sylvester Patterson, born 1798 in Scotland came to America and landed in New York in 1811. His family is found in 1840 census, Barrie Township, New York. Z. S. Patterson, one of six children listed, was born Feburary 3, 1830.
In early 1850's, Z. S. Patterson became superintendent of Baltimore and Ohio Railway. On December 25, 1856 he married Elender J. Shoemake and fourteen children were born to this union.
He joined the Uteca Church in Mississippi, Baptized in March 1860 and later that year ordained a deacon. In June 1862 he enlisted for three years in Confederate Army in Capt. Ferride's 37th Mississippi Regiment, and was mdischarged from the hospital at Enterprise, Mississippi January 12th, 1883. Always true to his calling he resumed his ministerial studies after his discharge. Licensed to Preach in 1865 and ordained a minister on September 27th, 1869.
In 1871 he moved to Louisiana and began active work in the ministry. He established many churches including:

The Brushy Creek Baptist Church was host to Beauregard Parish Association in 1878, 1892, 1940. Reverend Patterson's brother-in-law J. B. Shoemake, served as minisiter of this in 1892, 1922 - 1924 & 1926.
Members of this church from the beginning have been enriched due to the efforts of these Christain pioneers. If they had lost their faith in God, how would we have acquired ours.
Reverend Patterson was Baptist, true calling. He and his wife of 58 years were buried in Hyatt Cemetery, Fields Louisiana. The State of Louisiana, the Baptist church, and all Christains are richer in mind and sprit because of the dedication of this one man Reverend Z. S. Patterson.
