The farm is in Beauregard Parish (southwest Louisiana), 2.5 hours west / northwest of Baton Rouge on LA 26, halfway between Oberlin and DeRidder. It is about 48 miles northwest from the intersection of I-10 West and LA 26 North (at Exit 64 in Jennings). See map below.
Retirement Details:
We have retired from our Farmer's Market retail meat program -- a bit sooner than anticipated, but retired nevertheless.
Our planned road to retirement began in May of 2007 when we sold our entire adult breeding flock and some young lambs to a rancher in Missouri. I thought we kept enough male lambs to supply the Farmer's Market in Baton Rouge and Lake Charles through December of 2007, but we depleted our supply of lambs-to-eat much faster than anticipated. An October inventory assessment revealed that not enough of our remaining lambs are of a suitable age / weight for continuation of our retail meat program.
The flock sale and retirement is primarily due to me having Parkinson's Disease. While its physical manifestations do not yet significantly impair my ability to operate a farm -- the associated apathy caused by disease plus medication does dramatically reduce my interest in spending long days on the tractor, and in arising at 3:00 AM and driving 145 miles through the predawn fog to Baton Rouge.
Therefore, we are concluding our sheep operation and are offering for sale 110 acres of the west farm. We will focus our energies on the 200 acre east farm two miles away where we live, where I grew up, and where my 93 year-old father is still actively engaged in the cattle business.
