Each Saturday morning, downtown Lake Charles takes a step back in time with the Charlestown Farmer's Market. The market is a place where local people showcase such goods as fresh, locally grown vegetables, fruits, grains, live plants, baked goods, arts and crafts. One new addition to the Farmer's Market is Frank Boggs, Jr., a Southwest Louisiana resident and lamb salesman.
Boggs raises lamb in Sugartown. Among his products which he sells frozen at the Farmer's Market are lamb mignon, mild and spicy lamb sausage, lamburger patties, rack of lamb and ground lamb.
"The market for lamb in the Lake Area is very good, because lamb meat is more healthy than other meats on the market," Boggs said.
"My sheep are predominantly grass fed, 'not organic.' Most people are led to believe that organically raised lamb meat is better than predominantly grass-fed, which is not economically feasible in hot, humid Louisiana," he said. "It is actually better to supplement their diet with feed in the winter."
Boggs' sheep are also eco-friendly in that they are hormone- and antibiotic-free, he said.
Boggs first attended the Charlestown Farmer's Market in October.
"I am very pleased with my sales at the Charlestown Farmer's Market," said Boggs. On Oct. 7, for example, "Even though the crowd was smaller than the recent Red Stick Farmer's Market held in Baton Rouge, I still sold more product here at the Charlestown Farmer's Market," he said.
The next Farmer's Market will be Dec. 9, and Boggs plans to be there as well as every second Saturday of every month, rain or shine.
The market is located on Bilbo Street between Kirby and Iris streets and is open from 7 a.m. - noon. |
