On Words and Deeds

How often, friend, we tell someone
Who comes to us in need
That if he will only trust our Lord
He'll satisfy indeed
But after this we go right on
And in our usual way
Our actions speak much louder
Than the words we had to say

This friend then sees us struggle
To gain the things we crave
He sees us reach and push and grab
And cheat and shove and save
Since there isn't much of trusting
That he can see in this
He thinks that the advice we give
Must really be amiss

O, be careful of the way you live
Before this special friend
It's what he sees, not what you say
That matters in the end
If you really want to help him
Upon the road ahead
It rests upon the things you do
And not the words you said
